Be Willing To Stretch: Motivational Tip

Be Willing To Stretch:  Motivational Tip

Repeat after me…

I am surrounded by friends who have done what I want to do and done it authentically. They have a positive attitude, a solution-oriented approach to life, and strives o accomplish their dreams and goals, regardless of the circumstance! They will help me STRETCH, as I strive to STRETCH!!!

Stretch… Stretch… A little bit further… Hold it a bit longer… Come on… Ah… Okay, relax. How do you feel now? Well, if you are like most normal people then you probably don’t love stretching, but you probably loved the feeling of having stretched. Let me explain.

You see working in physical therapy I challenge a lot of my patient to adopt a stretching lifestyle! An interesting thing happens during stretching, especially when we elongate our stretch and go beyond the common 10 seconds. We are actually better off taking that stretch slower and longer because at some point those same muscles that are fighting us with tightness, resistance, and even signals of discomfort will eventually figure out that we are not giving in and that we are going to hold this pose for a while.

When our muscles realize that we are not going to quit then they start to relax and all of a sudden the painful stretch becomes a lot less painful. Sometimes we can even feel better and more comfortable during the stretch itself. When this happens, we do not have to wait for later to feel more at ease with stretching.

Be Willing To Stretch!!

Our life journey works just like this too. When we try something new and stretch a little bit out of our comfort zone, our brain and body send us signals of tightness, resistance, and discomfort. However, if we stick with the new thing for an elongated period of time something amazing happens. Our brains and bodies tend to realize that we aren’t going to quit and this new pressure isn’t going to go away. Our bodies and minds then adjust and relax a little bit causing us to no longer feel the same level of tightness, resistance, and discomfort that we felt before. Real-life is just like stretching, so hang in there, hold your pose for longer, things get better.
